Use Orbit molecular models for chemistry and biology education into organohalogens. Learn about halogen-containing compounds, isomerism, IUPAC naming, chemical reactivity, biological roles, and more with Orbit models.
Organohalogen organic compounds have one or more halogen atoms (fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine) bonded to carbon. They are key in organic chemistry studies for substitution and elimination reactions, stereoisomerism, and IUPAC nomenclature for halogenated compounds. In biology and medicine, organohalogens include pharmaceuticals, natural products, and environmental toxins. Orbit organohalogen molecular models allow students to visualize stereochemistry & functional group orientation on molecular reactivity, providing a hands-on learning experience for chemistry majors and biology, nursing, or premed students
Indigo Instruments has held inventory of genuine Cochranes of Oxford (Orbit) atoms & bonds for 30+ years. These parts are compatible with every molecular model set we have sold since day 1. This quality may appear expensive but no parts support from other vendors costs even more.
Compound | Chemistry Use Case | Biology / Medicine Relevance |
---|---|---|
Chloroethane | Simple alkyl halide; SN1/SN2 substitution, elimination reactions, stereochemistry lessons. | Demonstrates lab safety and basic halogen handling. |
Bromobenzene | Aromatic halide; electrophilic aromatic substitution and positional isomerism examples. | Represents bioactive halogenated aromatics and drug intermediates. |
Fluoxetine | Pharmaceutical organohalogen; illustrates structure–activity, stereochemistry, and IUPAC naming. | Antidepressant; example of halogen effect in medicinal chemistry. |
Iodoform | Trihalomethane; shows halogenation and nucleophilic reactions. | Historical antiseptic; pharmacology/toxicology lessons. |
Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) | Complex halogenated aromatics; demonstrates isomerism and substitution patterns. | Environmental toxins; relevance in metabolism, biochemistry, and public health. |
The models shown represent simple organo-halogens with: chloromethane in the middle; cis-dichloroethene in the lower left; 1,1,1,2 tetrachloroethane upper left; 1,1-dichloroethene upper right; trans-dichloroethene lower right. Build these & other organo halogens with the Indigo® Instruments 3D Molecular Model Builder
Note that the basic 68845NV model set only has 16 carbons and 6 green halogens, so it may only be possible to build 2 or 3 of these at the same time.
Every Orbit molecular model set sold by Indigo Instruments is fully compatible with others you might own. You can replenish any set or customize it with Genuine Cochranes of Oxford Orbit Atoms.
I've had consistently great service from this company. Our students seem to really appreciate the reasonable price. In the years that we've used this product, not one has been returned due to defects.
Considering how many of these we sell to schools every year, that is high praise indeed. Thanks letting us know.
