The Indigo® 68823W VSEPR model kit builds a single model linear AX2 molecular geometry with 180° bond angles and can be compared with XeF2, another linear shaped molecule but derived differently.

Linear geometry is the simplest shape in VSEPR theory with just two bonding atoms, one central atom & 180° bond angles but is important nonetheless. CO2 is essential to photosynthesis while HCN illustrates triple bonds as single electron domains, and BeCl2 is an incomplete octet. The Indigo® 68823W VSEPR model kit demonstrate the AX2 configuration with its single linear central atom & its two terminal positions. Contrast this model with XeF2 which has a trigonal bipyramidal central atom. Its linear shape of  180° is formed by three lone pairs occupying equatorial positions while having both bonding atoms axially.

Summary of Linear Shapes

Linear geometry produces the simplest possible bond angle, exactly 180°. Molecules with this configuration merit careful examination. In CO2 (AX2), two double bonds to oxygen are each treated as single electron domains in VSEPR theory, orienting 180° apart to minimize repulsion. Despite having two polar C=O bonds, CO2 has no net dipole moment. Its bond dipoles cancel exactly due to the linear symmetry. This makes CO2 an ideal starting point for discussing how molecular shape determines polarity, a concept students will apply throughout general and organic chemistry.

HCN also has a 180° linear geometry but is formed by a triple bond between carbon and nitrogen which counts as a single electron domain. Unlike CO2, HCN has a significant dipole moment since the bond dipoles do not cancel. This demonstrates that linear geometry alone does not guarantee a nonpolar molecule &particularly instructive in having the same shape but opposite polarity outcomes.

Compare CO2 with XeF2 built from the trigonal bipyramidal central atom.
