Lift and remove SMD components under microscope with the Indigo™ 22574 stainless steel precision pick. Safely remove tiny surface mount devices during PCB rework without pad damage.

Surface mount device (SMD) rework requires removing components so small they're barely visible to the naked eye. After applying heat to reflow solder, components must be lifted away without damaging PCB pads or adjacent components. Tweezers can slip and cause collateral damage, while vacuum tools may not grip tiny components reliably. The Indigo™ 22574 dental explorer tool provides rework technicians with controlled component removal. Its tip can get under component edges once solder is molten, while the right-angle tip accesses components in cramped areas surrounded by other devices. This tool is essential for modern electronics repair involving 0402, 0201, and even smaller component sizes.

Indigo™ dental tools are made with AISI 410 German surgical grade stainless steel, not "alloy steel" made from rusted cars. We've been selling dental tools on-line since 1998. Ours stay sharp longer & are autoclavable: see Documentation below that confirms chromium & manganese content.

How to Use

Position the PCB securely under a microscope with adequate magnification (typically 10-40x). Apply hot air or controlled heat to the component until solder reflows. Once solder is molten (indicated by slight component movement), immediately use the straight tip to gently lift one edge of the component. Avoid lateral forces that could damage pads. For tightly packed components, use the right-angle tip to access confined spaces. Work quickly but carefully; solder solidifies rapidly. If the component doesn't lift easily, reapply heat rather than forcing it. Clean solder from pads before installing replacement components.

Note: you can use one of our standard 10X jeweller/geology loupes with a cell phone camera for up to 50X magnification.

Need an ultrafine tool to clear clogged nozzles or microfilters? Insect pins may be a practical alternative. Our unique 100 pin sampler package has 10 pins in 10 thicknesses, all made with grade 316 stainless steel.

How to Use

Before adjustment, document current trimmer positions with photographs or marks. Identify the trimmer type and adjustment range from circuit documentation. Use the straight tip for conventional slot-head trimmers, engaging the slot fully before applying rotational force. For recessed trimmers, use the right-angle tip to reach into tight spaces. Make small incremental adjustments, typically 1/8 turn at a time, checking circuit performance after each change. If resistance increases suddenly, you may have reached the end of travel, forcing further will damage the trimmer. Mark final positions for future reference.

Kelli Cote Great quality products at a very reasonable price! Purchased some dental picks for my daughter's University paleontology club to help with their fossil preparation lab.

Sandra Mead I bought several stainless steel picks...strong,sharp and hold their shape; not like the ones you get on Amazon or at home depot...a good product at a good price...Thanks Indigo
