Remove matrix from delicate fossils with the Indigo™ 22574 precision dental explorer tool. Prepare paleontological specimens without damage for research, display, and collection purposes.

Fossil preparation demands removing surrounding matrix rock while preserving delicate bone, shell, or plant structures that may have survived millions of years only to risk damage during excavation. Traditional preparation tools can be too aggressive for fragile specimens or too large for detailed work on small fossils. The Indigo™ 22574 dental pick bridges this gap with its straight pointed tip for controlled matrix removal along fossil boundaries and its right-angle tip for undercut areas and tight spaces between fossil elements. Paleontologists, museum preparators, and serious fossil collectors will appreciate the tool's balance between effectiveness and control. This tool is autoclavable for research institutions requiring contamination-free handling.

Who Uses This Tool

  • Museum fossil preparators

  • Professional fossil collectors
  • Geological survey personnel
  • Natural history museum staff
  • Amateur paleontologists

Indigo™ dental tools are made with AISI 410 German surgical grade stainless steel, not "alloy steel" made from rusted cars. We've been selling dental tools on-line since 1998. Ours stay sharp longer & are autoclavable: see Documentation below that confirms chromium & manganese content.

How to Use

Work under magnification with good lighting. Stabilize the specimen securely to prevent movement during preparation. Use the straight tip to carefully pick away matrix along fossil boundaries, working parallel to the fossil surface rather than directly into it. The right-angle tip accesses areas where the fossil curves away or where matrix has infiltrated gaps. Work slowly and methodically; rushing risks irreversible damage. Periodically consolidate fragile fossil areas with appropriate adhesives before continuing. Document your work photographically at key stages. If you encounter structures you can't identify, stop and consult with experienced preparators before proceeding.

Need an ultrafine tool to clear clogged nozzles or microfilters? Insect pins may be a practical alternative. Our unique 100 pin sampler package has 10 pins in 10 thicknesses, all made with grade 316 stainless steel.
