Cut precise inlay channels in wood and soft metals with the Indigo™ 22578 stainless steel curved hook pick. Create tapered grooves for decorative inlay strips in furniture, instruments, and fine woodworking.
Decorative inlay work requires precisely cut channels with clean edges and consistent depth. Whether inlaying contrasting wood strips into furniture, metal wire into guitar fingerboards, or shell into jewelry boxes, the channel must hold the inlay securely without gaps. The Indigo™ 22578's curved talon design provides craftspeople with controlled channel cutting. The sharp hooked tip cuts grooves that taper slightly inward at the bottom, creating the mechanical lock that holds inlays in place. This is the same principle dentists use when preparing tooth cavities, and it works equally well for decorative arts. The curve allows you to follow curved inlay patterns naturally, while the single-ended design provides excellent control for delicate work. Luthiers use this technique for fingerboard position markers, furniture makers for decorative banding, and jewelers for wire inlay in precious metals.
Indigo™ dental tools are made with AISI 410 German surgical grade stainless steel, not "alloy steel" made from rusted cars. We've been selling dental tools on-line since 1998. Ours stay sharp longer & are autoclavable: see Documentation below that confirms chromium & manganese content.
Mark your inlay pattern clearly on the work surface. For straight channels, use a straightedge as a guide. Use the curved tip to make initial scoring cuts along your layout lines, establishing the channel edges. Make multiple light passes, gradually deepening the channel to the desired depth. The natural curve of the tool creates the slight undercut that locks inlays mechanically. For curved patterns, work slowly and let the tool's geometry follow the curve naturally. Check depth frequently with the inlay material itself. The inlay should sit slightly proud of the surface for final sanding flush. Keep the tool sharp for clean cuts. Dull tools tear wood fibers and create ragged edges. Clean out debris between passes for best visibility.
Need an ultrafine tool to clear clogged nozzles or microfilters? Insect pins may be a practical alternative. Our unique 100 pin sampler package has 10 pins in 10 thicknesses, all made with grade 316 stainless steel.
