Deepen and refine guitar nut slots with the Indigo™ 22578 stainless steel curved hook pick. Cut precise string grooves for proper action height and string seating on guitars and stringed instruments.
Proper guitar setup requires nut slots cut to precise depths and angles to achieve correct string height and prevent buzzing or binding. Off-the-shelf nuts often have shallow or incorrectly angled slots requiring modification. The Indigo™ 22578's curved talon design provides luthiers and guitar technicians with controlled slot deepening capability. The sharp hooked tip cuts grooves that taper inward at the bottom, matching the natural profile needed for proper string seating. The curve allows you to follow the angle from the fingerboard toward the headstock, creating the slight back-angle that prevents string buzz. Unlike straight files that can only cut perpendicular to the nut, this tool's geometry creates the compound angles professional setups require. The stainless steel holds an edge for consistent cutting while being gentle enough not to tear bone, TUSQ, or synthetic nut materials.
Indigo™ dental tools are made with AISI 410 German surgical grade stainless steel, not "alloy steel" made from rusted cars. We've been selling dental tools on-line since 1998. Ours stay sharp longer & are autoclavable: see Documentation below that confirms chromium & manganese content.
Loosen or remove strings to access the nut. Mark the desired slot depth with pencil if needed. Use the curved tip to make light cutting strokes along the existing slot, following the angle from fingerboard to headstock. Make multiple light passes rather than heavy cuts. Nut materials can chip if you're too aggressive. The tapered cutting action naturally creates the slight V-shape that centers strings properly. Check string height frequently as you work; it's easy to remove material but impossible to add it back. For wound strings, slots should be slightly wider at the top to accommodate the wrap. Clean out debris after each pass. Test with strings at tension before making final adjustments.
Need an ultrafine tool to clear clogged nozzles or microfilters? Insect pins may be a practical alternative. Our unique 100 pin sampler package has 10 pins in 10 thicknesses, all made with grade 316 stainless steel.
