How does cetylpyridinium work? Cetylpyridinium interferes with microbial enzymes involved in cell wall synthesis & nucleic acid replication. As a general purpose disinfectant, it inhibits the growth of bacteria, fungi, and some viruses. It is especially effective against Gram-positive bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans and Actinomyces sp. which occur in oral infections associated with dental plaque (biofilms). This can reduce the risk of tooth cavities and periodontal disease.
