Enterobactin's molecular structure is a siderophore consisting of three catechols linked by peptide bonds. It is produced by certain gram-negative bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas sp. These bacteria use it to chelate iron before uptake. Enterobactin has been studied extensively regarding fundamental coordination chemistry of siderophores.
