Cortisol is a glucocorticoid steroidal hormone produced in the adrenal cortex & is released primarily in response to stress; hydrocortisone refers its use as medication for treatment of various ailments such as inflammation.

Cortisol has many functions including promotion of glucose production (gluconeogenesis), lung surfactant in developing fetuses & inhibition of release of compounds that cause inflammation.
