It likely varies quite a bit with droplet size. A small drop will have little spread compared to a large one.

I bought these for the purpose of locating hard to observe, intermittent water leaks. By strategically placing small sections of the paper in various places, I was able to monitor on a schedule rather than guessing when the leaks might happen. Now the leaks are fixed and I can monitor periodically for signs of new problems.
