Linoleic acid is an 18 carbon polyunsaturated omega 6 fatty acid. It consists of a 17 carbon aliphatic (alkene) portion which has two cis double bonds at the carbon 9 and carbon 12 position and a carboxylic acid functional group. The double bonded carbon at position 12 is 6th from the end methyl or omega carbon hence its structural designation of C18:2, cis9,cis12. Dietary sources of linoleic acid include oils extracted from sunflowers, corn, soybeans, sesame seeds & almonds. Linoleic acid is considered an essential fatty acid since humans cannot synthesize this vital precursor to many enzymes and hormone like compounds.
