Glycine May Be a Cheap Insomnia Fix

Glycine can act like a sleep supplement by influencing your brain's "thermostat". A 3g dose glycine taken before bed will cross the blood-brain barrier and bind to NMDA receptors in the suprachiasmatic nucleus which is the brain's master circadian clock. This is in turn will activate the medial preoptic area and trigger peripheral vasodilation. This will cause blood flow increases to your hands and feet so that heat radiates through your skin and lower your core body temperature. This temperature drop is the same signal your body produces naturally before sleep onset.

Researchers found that after ablating the SCN in animal models, glycine's sleep-promoting and hypothermic effects disappeared entirely, confirming this is the target. In human trials the 3g dose reduced sleep-onset latency and next-day fatigue in volunteers with sleep complaints. Among the evidence was polysomnographic data which showed improved sleep quality that was correlated with the temperature shift. A key advantage is that there is no sedative "hangover". It works the same as a hot bath by causing peripheral vasodilation which leadings to the body's core cooling.
