Amoxicillin is a broad spectrum antibiotic used to kill Gram negative & positive bacteria associated with ear, throat & skin infections, pneumonia, Salmonella & Lyme disease. Its chemical structure, similar to penicillin, is characterized by a beta-lactam ring, a four-sided ring consisting of three carbons and one nitrogen atom. This ring is believed responsible for the antibiotic effects of amoxicillin which interfere with enzymes needed for the synthesis of bacterial cell walls.
