Need to reseal your wood stove door, repair firebricks or seal stove pipes? The Indigo™ 22577 dental scraper can clean out old RTV silicone sealant & caulk without damaging cast iron or steel surfaces meant to withstand high temperatures.

Failed or deteriorating silicone sealant and caulk must be completely removed for new sealant to adhere properly. Utility knives and razor blades can scratch aluminum, porcelain, acrylic, and tile surfaces. The Indigo™ 22577's broad curved scraper blade provides a safer, more effective removal of baked on gaskets. The wide scraping edge lifts and rolls old silicone away while its smooth blade won't scratch most surfaces when used carefully.

Why Use RTV Silicone in Gaskets?

RTV silicone has many important features:

  • RTV vulcanizes in ways similar to rubber. It cures upon exposure to air forming a skin in 5-25 minutes and achieving full cure in 24-72 hours.
  • It is available as: one-component RTV-1 which is air-curing; two-component RTV-2 which requires a catalyst.
  • Its applications are varied, from making gaskets in engine oil pans & water pumps to sealing, bonding, and mold-making.
  • It resists weathering, moisture, and chemicals while remaining flexible.

Why Use RTV Silicone Caulking?

RTV silicone is a high performance caulk used for sealing and bonding, particularly in kitchens, bathrooms, and automotive applications. It is waterproof, flexible, resists heat, and adheres well to glass, metal, and ceramics, often outlasting standard caulk. It's especially popular with home mechanics doing engine work; car restoration hobbyists, and car performance enthusiasts upgrading intake systems.

  • Neutral Cure (NC) RTV version are good for sensitive materials like metal, concrete, or electronics (non-corrosive). Acid/Acetoxy Cure RTV is suitable for glass and tile but may corrode metal.
  • It's best used in bathrooms, showers, sinks, aquariums but also high-temperature areas such as engines & stoves.
  • Clean surfaces to be caulked thoroughly then apply a bead and tool within 5 minutes since it forms a skin quickly.
  • It cures in 24 hours forming a flexible, non-shrinking, permanent seal.

Where to Use Indigo™ 22577 Scraper Tool for RTV Removal?

Mainly in hard to reach areas such as crevices and small areas in general:

  • Corners where front/rear intake seals meet the engine block
  • Bolt holes with old gasket residue in threads
  • Water passage areas such as coolant ports
  • Detail work on aluminum got final cleanup without risking gouges

What About RTV Silicone Cement Applications?

Silicone gasket cement is a high temperature silicate-based adhesive. It is designed to secure fiberglass gaskets into wood stoves, furnaces, and fireplace doors. This creates an airtight, fireproof seal that can withstand upwards of 1100oC. Removing this cement with scratching any underlying metal requires a specialized tool such as the Indigo™ 22577 stainless steel curved dental scraper.

Indigo™ dental tools are made with AISI 410 German surgical grade stainless steel, not "alloy steel" made from rusted cars. We've been selling dental tools on-line since 1998. Ours stay sharp longer & are autoclavable: see Documentation below that confirms chromium & manganese content.

How to Remove Silicone Sealants

  • Cut through thick sealant beads to make mechanical removal easier.
  • Apply silicone remover or mineral spirits for stubborn or aged sealant
  • Push the scraper at a low angle to work under the sealant bead
  • Work methodically to remove all old material; remaining sealant compromises new sealant adhesion.
  • Sealant in grout lines or narrow joints should be removed without digging into surrounding surfaces.
  • After mechanical removal, clean joints thoroughly with appropriate solvents and allow complete drying before applying new sealant.

What Do Our Customers Say?

  • Kelli Cote: Great quality products at a very reasonable price! Purchased some dental picks for my daughter's University paleontology club to help with their fossil preparation lab.
  • Sandra Mead: I bought several stainless steel picks, scrapers and spatulas for art and mechanical work. They're great! They are strong, sharp and hold their shape; not like the ones you get on Amazon or at home depot. Finally a good product at a good price. I'm telling all my friends about this site. Thanks Indigo.
