Remove old silicone sealant and caulk with the Indigo™ 22577 stainless steel curved scraper. Clean joints for fresh sealant application without damaging tile, tubs, or fixture surfaces.
Failed or deteriorating silicone sealant and caulk in bathrooms, kitchens, and around fixtures must be completely removed before reapplication since new sealant won't adhere properly to old material. Utility knives and razor blades can scratch porcelain, acrylic, and tile surfaces, while also presenting safety concerns in wet environments. The Indigo™ 22577's broad curved scraper provides a safer, more effective sealant removal. The wide scraping edge lifts and rolls old silicone away from joints, while the curved profile conforms to the varied surfaces encountered around tubs, sinks, and shower enclosures. The smooth stainless steel won't scratch most bathroom surfaces when used with proper technique. Thorough old sealant removal is critical for successful resealing work, preventing the mold, leaks, and adhesion failures that result from incomplete preparation.
Indigo™ dental tools are made with AISI 410 German surgical grade stainless steel, not "alloy steel" made from rusted cars. We've been selling dental tools on-line since 1998. Ours stay sharp longer & are autoclavable: see Documentation below that confirms chromium & manganese content.
Begin by cutting through old sealant beads with a utility knife if they're thick. This breaks the adhesion bond and makes mechanical removal easier. Apply silicone remover or mineral spirits if dealing with particularly stubborn or aged sealant, allowing adequate dwell time per product instructions. Hold the curved scraper at a low angle and use pushing motions to work under the sealant bead, lifting it away from the joint. The broad edge helps maintain consistent contact across the joint length. Work methodically along the entire joint, removing all old material. Any remaining sealant will compromise new sealant adhesion. Pay special attention to corners where old sealant accumulates. For sealant in grout lines or narrow joints, the curved profile allows you to follow the contour without digging into surrounding surfaces. After mechanical removal, clean joints thoroughly with appropriate solvents and allow complete drying before applying new sealant.
