Remove glaze drips from ceramic pottery bases before firing with the Indigo™ 22577 stainless steel curved scraper. Clean unfired glaze without damaging greenware or bisque surfaces.
Glaze drips on pottery bases cause pieces to fuse to kiln shelves during firing, potentially ruining both the piece and expensive kiln furniture. While wax resist prevents most base contamination, glaze inevitably drips or runs during application, requiring careful removal before firing. Sponges and cloths can't completely remove dried glaze, while aggressive scraping damages greenware or bisque surfaces. The Indigo™ 22577's broad curved scraper provides potters and ceramic artists with controlled glaze removal. The wide scraping edge efficiently cleans bases and removes drips without concentrating pressure at points that could crack unfired clay. The curved profile follows the rounded forms common in pottery, from bowl exteriors to vase bases. This tool is essential for production potters processing multiple pieces and for anyone wanting to avoid the frustration of glaze-fused disasters in the kiln.
Indigo™ dental tools are made with AISI 410 German surgical grade stainless steel, not "alloy steel" made from rusted cars. We've been selling dental tools on-line since 1998. Ours stay sharp longer & are autoclavable: see Documentation below that confirms chromium & manganese content.
Inspect all glazed pieces carefully before loading the kiln, checking bases and any unglazed areas for stray glaze. For glaze on leather-hard greenware, work gently as the clay is fragile. Hold the curved scraper at a very low angle and use light scraping motions to remove glaze without gouging the clay surface. For bisque ware (already fired once), you can apply more pressure as the material is more durable. The broad edge allows you to work across the entire base surface efficiently. Pay special attention to where vertical surfaces meet horizontal bases. Glaze accumulates in these transitions. For thick glaze buildup, remove bulk material first, then make a final pass for complete cleaning. After scraping, wipe bases with a damp sponge to remove any remaining glaze particles. Verify bases are completely clean. Even tiny glaze particles can cause sticking. Mark cleaned pieces as "kiln ready" to avoid reprocessing.
Need an ultrafine tool to clear clogged nozzles or microfilters? Insect pins may be a practical alternative. Our unique 100 pin sampler package has 10 pins in 10 thicknesses, all made with grade 316 stainless steel.
