This Indigo® molecular kit makes testosterone's complex steroid structure understandable for university students & medical professionals alike. Comes fully assembled or build save with our 3D Molecular Model Builder. Either way, it's a best in class, chemically accurate model.
Testosterone is the principal male androgenic hormone & has the chemical formula: C19H28O2. Testosterone is an androstanoid whose chemical structure has 2 cycloalkane rings fused into a polycyclic structure that consists of the 2 cyclohexanes along with 1 cyclohexene & one cyclopentane ring. The outer cyclohexene ring has a ketone functional group (C=O) at the carbon 3 position. The overall structure is relatively planar due to the arrangement of its fused rings.
Testosterone's molecular structure is typical of steroid hormones derived from cholesterol and shares a similar ring motif. Testosterone is synthesized primarily in male testes while females produce smaller amounts in their ovaries and adrenal glands.
Compare testosterone's structure to cholesterol, estradiol, progesterone & cortisone.
During the first 6 weeks of fetal development, male & female reproductive tissues are identical. At ~week 7 in utero, the SRY sex-related gene on the Y chromosome initiates development of the male external genitalia including testicles & the male urogental tract including the prostate gland and seminal vesicles & maturation of sperm cells (spermatogenesis).
Testosterone's steroid chemical structure interacts with androgen receptors in target tissues to regulate gene expression and cellular functions. Its occurrence in mature males is roughly 8 times higher than females. It is responsible for male secondary sexual characteristics such as facial and body hair growth patterns, deeper voices, greater muscle mass and bone density & fat distribution.
It promotes & maintenance of mood, physical energy levels, and cognitive skills. It is closely associated with territorial behaviour such increased aggression, sex drive, social dominance and courtship. Lower than normal levels can result in anxiety and depression, sexual performance issues, and bone loss. Above normal in men increases the risk of hyperandrogenism, heart failure, mortality and male patterned baldness.
Struggling to make molecular structures understandable? Help students visualize complex steroid chemistry in 3D with the Indigo®: testosterone molecular kit, Your top choice, science instruction aid for teachers, students & medical professionals worldwide. Unlike flat diagrams, our physical models bring steroid chemistry to life & make complex androgen structures instantly graspable. Meets NGSS standards.
Why educators choose Indigo® Instruments models? We've kept inventory of genuine Molymod atoms & bonds for 30+ years; compatible with every molecular model kit we have sold. This level of quality may seem expensive but no parts support from other vendors costs even more.
This model comes assembled but our 3D Molecular Model Builder can select the parts for testosterone & can rotate the image so you can assemble it yourself.
Every Molymod molecular model kit sold by Indigo® Instruments is fully compatible with others you might own. If you ever lose a part you can replace it with our genuine Molymod Molecular Model Atoms & Bonds. See the entire range of Molymod Molecular Model Kits available from Indigo® Instruments.
