Lead acetate test paper can detect acidic and sulfur gases that cause yellowing, brittleness, and odor in books, parchment, and leather artifacts.

Historic paper, parchment, and leather objects are highly susceptible to damage from airborne sulfur and acidic gases. Even trace hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, or organic acids can trigger yellowing, brittleness, and odor formation. Indigo® lead acetate test paper provides a simple, non-destructive indicator of such degradation risks such as blackening in the presence of hydrogen sulfide or related volatile sulfur compounds, and darkening over time in acidic environments. Conservation professionals can use these strips in storage rooms, vaults, or testing chambers to identify unsafe display materials, adhesives, or enclosures that emit reactive gases. This low-cost method complements instrumental air monitoring and helps prioritize where mitigation or ventilation improvements are most needed.

Best Practices

Best Practices Guidelines
Testing frequency Check new storage materials or enclosures upon installation; repeat quarterly for ongoing monitoring.
Placement Position test papers near suspect materials but out of direct light; compare to an unexposed control.
Interpretation Darkening or blackening over several days indicates presence of sulfur or acid vapors.
Follow-up actions Ventilate or isolate identified sources; reassess after environmental adjustments.

Learning Outcomes / Key Features Details
Understand gas-induced deterioration Recognize how sulfur and acidic vapors damage cellulose and collagen-based materials.
Demonstrate passive detection methods Use lead acetate paper to visually indicate presence of reactive gases in storage areas.
Assess environmental risks Locate pollutant sources such as adhesives, coatings, or packing materials through comparative testing.
Integrate preventive monitoring Apply periodic testing to evaluate air filtration and environmental control measures.

The test strips from Indigo are top notch. They are always competitively priced and shipped on time. The best part of dealing with Indigo is that they stay on top of their products. We had a bad batch of strips arrive in the past but before we could figure it out the hard way, Indigo had identified the issue and had a replacement order already in the mail to us. Pretty hard to beat that kind of customer service.
