The Indigo® 68763W model kit can build a brookite unit cell, the most structurally complex polymorph of titanium dioxide (TiO2). Brookite belongs to the D2h point group and crystallographic space group Pbca. Its orthorhombic symmetry has eight TiO2 formula units per unit cell (Z=8). Each Ti4+ ion is octahedrally coordinated by six O2- ions, but the TiO6 octahedra in brookite share both edges and corners in a distinctive pattern that produces the orthorhombic unit cell. Brookite has a very high refractive index of 2.5, more than diamond's 2.42, and is of interest in optical applications.
