This molecular model shows the backbone of a beta pleated sheet using 20 amino acid cores. The model consists of alpha carbons and amino & carboxyl groups with "R" groups projecting above & below the sheet's plane. The sheet can be built with chains running parallel or antiparallel where the N & C terminal ends alternate.

The "R" groups can be augmented with additional parts to show the most commonly occurring beta sheet amino acid residues of tryptophan, tyrosine & phenylalanine. Spider & other silks are characterized in having large sections of beta sheet structures.

You will need two kits to compare the alpha helix & beta sheet structures or parallel & antiparallel versions of beta sheets.

Details

The beta pleated sheet model uses 20 amino acid cores to build the structure. The 50mm long bonds come with white inserts to indicate they are being used to show hydrogen bonds. If you wish to extend the amino acid side chains represented by the green atoms, you can use the advanced student organic chemistry model set, the class organic chemistry model set or the class biochemistry model set.
