This 12.5x5mm (~1/2x3/16”) neodymium boron disc magnet can hold nearly 9 pounds & can be used in any number of applications.

Not just for knives or kitchens. Styles vary greatly in design & cost but you can build a custom version at a fraction of the cost. Magnetic knife holders are a great way to organize & securely store your whisks, ladles, work tools, art supplies & keys according to functionality. Size it to fit any nook ;& cranny in the kitchen, garage, tool room or craft areas.

Picking the right magnet size & strength is a matter of desired thickness & distance between the embedded magnet & front surface of the knife rack. Check the specifications table below for holding force vs distance. If the remaining wood is only 1mm thick, this magnet can hold over 6 pounds. A thicker magnet like the 12.5x7.5 {link] can hold 8.2lbs through the same wood thickness. You can mix magnet thicknesses or diameters to match different sized knives.

Details
Holding force is what counts & it depends on how close the magnet is to the knife. Drill a shallow hole first & drop the magnet in. A #00 rubber stopper (see Related Products below) can keep the magnet in place while you test whether the knife holds. If not, drill a little deeper & try again.
