Buy Indigo® phenolphthalein test papers for fast, inexpensive ammonia gas leak detection. Ammonia changes phenolphthalein paper from white to pink at pH 8.3 & higher. Only $3.95 for 100 strips; save even more with quantity discounts.
Find ammonia gas leaks by wetting one end of the test paper with water and then holding it near the suspected leak. If the color change is immediate, get a protective mask with an air supply.

Phenolphthalein is itself a weak acid and colorless when dissolved in distilled water. When a basic (alkaline) compound such as ammonia is added, the increase in pH alters its chemical structure and changes the color of the solution to pink/fuchsia. This is a simple test for ammonia gas using litmus paper infused with phenolphthalein.
Phenolphthalein strips can detect ammonia in air since its pH of 11.6 turns phenolphthalein a pink/fuchsia color. The test strip has to be wetted first so the ammonia gas can dissolve onto the wet strip. This test for ammonia gas using litmus paper is strictly qualitative, i.e. yes or no.
