Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is one of the most effective and misunderstood disinfectants. It’s powerful, safe, and economical but is relatively unstable compared to chemically similar sodium hypochlorite. HOCl-based skin, eye or wound sprays are extremely effective but need to be tested frequently.
HOCl is pH dependent & exists in equilibrium with OCl-. Its concentration various as a function of pH, as shown in this equation: HOCl = H++OCl-. At pH < 6.5, it is mostly HOCl while over pH 8, it shifts to OCl-. This test strip which measures free chlorine may test positive for chlorine but still be low in active HOCl, especially if the pH drifts towards the alkaline. This is easy to monitor with a simple pH 4-7 test strip. See below for the procedure.
All Indigo® chlorine bleach (sodium hypochlorite) test strips have a 3 year minimum guaranteed shelf life & come with a Certificate of Analysis, Stability & SDS documents listed below; Certificate of Conformance on request. Be prepared for any health & safety audit or inspection.
NDAA Section 889 form available to Government Purchasers upon request.
First use the 0-300ppm chlorine test detect total free chlorine which includes both hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and hypochlorite ion (OCl-).
Then, make a second measurement using the pH test strip. This will reveal the proportions of chlorine in the HOCl & OCl-forms.
At pH 6.0, over 90% of the free chlorine is HOCl (which is what you want). At pH 7.5, that drops to around 50%. By pH 8.5, it's. You will have to decide what level you should discard & replace.
All Indigo® test strips have a minimum 3 year shelf life. You can be confident, however, in using them up over the course of a 4 year period. See our blog: "Test Strip Expiration Dates; Good Today, Dead Tomorrow?"
Note: Must be used in conjunction with pH4-7 test strips. See Related Products below & add to cart.
The high chlorine test strips are handy for operators to measure Free Chlorine levels to ensure adequate dosages have been achieved when disinfecting watermains and cleaning storage facilities. They arrived very quickly.
I am glad these are packaged in a container; we have had some in the past packaged in a paper envelope (from another company), which is hard to keep dry. They work just as advertised - the only imperfection for us is that the colors are fairly similar and it can be hard to tell at a glance what the result is. Otherwise, great.
Thanks for the feedback. The packaging for most sanitizer test strips come in special desiccant lined containers which is explained further in: Test Strip Expiration Dates; Good Today, Dead Tomorrow?
Some of the color charts are indeed harder to read than others. Good lighting can help. Fluorescent lighting is not as contrast friendly as natural sunlight or halogen or quartz.
