Macular generation affects the central field of view essential to reading. These magnifiers can enlarge text so that the letters/words can be inferred even with the central field of view missing. The smaller magnifier, 30mm (1.25") has three 5X lenses that can be stacked to do 10X or 15X magnification. The larger magnifier, 50mm (2") can enlarge text by 10X; its larger field of view may be useful for some reading materials.

My mom keeps the 30mm magnifier with her at all times and it really helps her and works very well for her. The case for the 2 inch is too bulky (for travel). I wish we could only buy the small one by itself.
